Courtyard Garden, London

This design transforms a tiny, enclosed outside space into a relaxing courtyard garden. The clients, a professional couple, want to maximise the limited space and for it to feel like a natural extension to the open-plan kitchen diner at the rear of their terraced house. The curved design draws attention away from the imposing straight lines and corners of the courtyard. A circular patio complete with bistro seating set and planters creates an intimite seating area.

The central feature of the garden is a sweeping raised bed constructed from London stock brick to match the house, topped with a curved bench seat made from wood. Design features such as stone setts edging the circular patio and woven oak fence panels introduce natural and traditional materials which the clients enjoy.

The planting is low maintenance yet is sufficiently varied to provide the clients with an opportunity to garden.  Climbers trained on the new fencing and an obelisk set into the raised bed adds vertical interest. The colour palette is focused on blues, dusky pinks, whites and greens.

The clients hope to implement the design following works on their house in 2014.
