Country Courtyard Garden, Surrey

This courtyard style garden replaces a 10 metre swimming pool no longer needed by the clients.

A series of gently stepped paths and planting beds create a place to wander, to garden and to enjoy wildlife.

The design reuses the existing paving and complements it with a lawn walk and self-binding gravel paths enhanced with granite sett detailing.

The new garden is now a wildlife haven, filled with perennials and grasses to attract bees and butterflies. A beautiful cast concrete water bath attracts a variety of birds to the garden and introduces the gentle sound of water.

The clients are plant lovers and keen gardeners. A variety of topiary adds structure to the garden: the clients’ existing collection of Box (Buxus sempervirens) topiary balls, cones and spirals has been supplemented with clipped balls of Yew (Taxus baccata) and Japanese holly (Ilex crenata). Specimen small trees – Acer atropurpureum, Betula utilis jacquemontii and a multistem Prunus serrula – give height and depth to the garden. A soft colour palette of pinks, purples and blues runs through the garden. A drip irrigation system on a timer will help the clients manage watering, particularly when they travel abroad.
