Contemporary small garden

Smooth limestone paving, textured planting, splashes of vibrant colour and a feature waterwall

This is a contemporary scheme for the small rear garden of a newly renovated Victorian townhouse. The clients are a couple who are both designers with a love of contemporary art, design and sculpture. They want a garden for entertaining and to enjoy from their open-plan kitchen, day and night, all year round. This scheme offers an exciting design solution with the following features:

  • planting for year round interest including evergreen shrubs, climbers on tension wires attached to boundary fencing and a variety of perennials and grasses with splashes of bright colour
  • smooth, sawn limestone paving matched to the colour of the kitchen floor to give a seamless feel from the house to the garden
  • seating forĀ  at least 8 including built-in bench seating with inset uplights and a bed of lavender
  • an uplit waterwall to be enjoyed from the garden and the house, set into a bed of perennial planting
  • container planting in contemporary feature planters
  • hidden access to rear and storage for bikes/tools
