Phoenix Perennials Plant Nursery, Hampshire

Wildlife garden on chalk with pond

This garden emerged from an unusual brief: to create a wildlife habitat on a chalk mound at a plant nursery in Hampshire. This provided an opportunity to design a beautiful combination of perennials, grasses and annuals which will maximise wildlife visitors, particularly rare butterflies found only on chalk.

I created a design inspired by my observations of native chalk downlands and by the iconic approach to planting design used by Dutch designer Piet Oudolf who creates ‘naturalistic’ prairie-style with blocks or drifts of perennials and bulbs.

The design incorporates a blend of native and non-native species, as well as a wildlife pond.
